Who Rolls Out the Digital Voter ID Card?

IOCL Chairman Announces Fuel Prices were Cut to not Impact Margin

According to Indian Oil Chairman Shrikant Madhav Vaidya, the company's marketing margins are not expected to be impacted by the recent reduction in the price of petrol and diesel. Speaking to reporters here, Vaidya stated that the action should not have much impact on the bottom lines. He also added that the company will be able to make decisions about future price reductions once it has seen how the price of crude oil behaves globally. Election Commission Unveils Timetable for Lok Sabha Polls

The Election Commission unveiled the timetable for the Lok Sabha elections on 16 March 2024. The voting is set to commence on 19 April and culminate on 1 June 2024, spanning over 7 phases, with vote counting scheduled for 4 June 2024. In the initial phase, elections for 102 constituencies will be conducted, followed by 89 in the second phase, 94 in the third phase, 96 in the fourth, 49 in the fifth, 57 in the sixth, and 57 in the seventh phase. Simultaneously, assembly elections in Arunachal Pradesh and Sikkim are slated for 19 April 2024, while Andhra Pradesh will see polls on 13 May 2024. Odisha's assembly elections will span four phases: 13 May 2024, 20 May 2024, 25 May 2024, and 1 June 2024. Additionally, by-polls for 26 Assembly constituencies will be held concurrently.

Google releases updated tools to help elections

In an effort to support the general elections in India, Google is launching new initiatives. The company says these will protect its platforms from misuse, give voters access to high-quality information, and facilitate the navigation of AI-generated content. The tech giant has collaborated with the Election Commission of India (ECI) ahead of the elections to make it easier for people to find important voting information in Hindi and English on Google Search.  

Every advertiser who wants to run election ads on Google's platforms must go through an identity verification process. They must provide a pre-certificate issued by the ECI or any other person authorised by the poll panel for every ad they wish to run and include in-ad disclosures that make it clear who paid for the advertisement.

Elections for 56 Rajya Sabha seats will be conducted on 27 February

On 29 January 2024, the Election Commission of India (ECI) declared that the elections for 56 Rajya Sabha seats will be conducted across 15 states on 27 February 2024. The deadline for submitting nomination documents is 15 February 2024. The polling will be held from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. and the votes will be counted on the same day. The state of Uttar Pradesh has the highest number of seats (10), followed by Bihar and Maharashtra. Maharashtra and Bihar each have six Rajya Sabha seats. Madhya Pradesh and West Bengal have five Rajya Sabha seats while Karnataka has four Rajya Sabha seats. 

Rajasthan, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, and Odisha each have three seats. Uttarakhand, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, and Chhattisgarh have one seat in the Upper House each. On 2 April 2024, the terms of office of the Members of the Council of States who were elected from states apart from Rajasthan and Odisha will come to an end. The terms of office of those elected from Rajasthan and Odisha will end on 3 April 2024.

Ahead of 2024 Elections, Election Commission Runs Awareness Campaigns about VVPAT and EVMs

An Election Commission of India (ECI) official stated that a nationwide awareness campaign on voter verifiable paper audit trails (VVPAT) and electronic voting machines (EVMs) is being conducted in advance of the 2024 Lok Sabha election. The program's goal is to give citizens a firsthand understanding of the voting process and familiarise them with the machines. In 31 states and Union Territories, the program consists of outreach and awareness initiatives in 3,464 assembly constituencies distributed across 613 districts (apart from the five states that just held elections).

Election Commission Launches Nationwide Awareness Drive on EVMs and VVPATs for 2024 Lok Sabha Elections

The Election Commission has initiated a nationwide awareness campaign on EVMs and VVPATs in preparation for the 2024 Lok Sabha Elections. Over 3,500 demonstration centres and nearly 4,250 mobile vans have been deployed for this awareness initiative. Conducted before each General Election to the Lok Sabha and State Legislative Assembly, the program aims to provide information about the fundamental features of EVMs and VVPATs. It outlines the step-by-step process of casting votes and educates voters on how to verify their choices using the VVPAT slip. This extensive program covers outreach and awareness activities in 3,464 Assembly Constituencies spanning 613 Districts across 31 States and Union Territories.

Linking Aadhar card and Voter ID card is yet to begin as per the Election Commission of India

The Election Commission of India (ECI) has informed that the linking Aadhar card and Voter ID card has not yet started. The time period for submitting Form 6B has been extended till the end of March 2024. The elector must provide the consent through Aadhaar authentication in Form 6B for voluntary linking of Aadhaar with Voter ID.

List of upcoming elections in India

Assemble elections will take place in six states in 2024 with the approaching Lok Sabha elections, and in Rajasthan, Mizoram, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, and Telangana, the assembly elections are scheduled in the second half of 2023.   

In Mizoram, the Assembly Elections are set to take place in November-December 2023, and in the Chhattisgarh Assembly Election for 2023 is likely to happen in November 2023. The Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan Assembly Elections 2023 are set to take place in November and December 2023, respectively. 

The Telangana Assembly election, Andhra Pradesh election, Odisha Legislative Assembly election, and Arunachal Pradesh assembly election will take place in or before December 2023, before June 2024, on or before June 2024, and in or before April 2024, respectively. While the Sikkim Legislative Assembly election, Haryana Legislative Assembly election, and Maharashtra Legislative Assembly election are expected to happen on or before April 2024, on or before October 2024, and on or before October 2024, respectively.

Updates on Candidates and Voter Turnout of Assembly bypolls 2023

In today's by-polls, seven Assembly seats in six different states are up for election. These include Dumri in Jharkhand, Puthuppally in Kerala, Boxanagar and Dhanpur in Tripura, Bageshwar in Uttarakhand, Ghosi in Uttar Pradesh, and Dhupguri in West Bengal. These elections were prompted by the recent passing of incumbent MLAs and, in some cases, resignations. In Dumri, Jharkhand, the seat is vacant due to the passing of Jagarnath Mahto, with candidates from JMM, AJSU, and AIMIM, and an 11.40% voter turnout by 9 am. In Puthuppally, Kerala, the seat became vacant after the demise of Congress's Oommen Chandy, with candidates from Congress, CPI(M), BJP, and AAP, and a 26.6% voter turnout by 11 am. 

In Dhanpur and Boxanagar, Tripura, Dhanpur's by-poll is due to BJP's Pratima Bhoumik's resignation, and Boxanagar's by-poll follows the death of CPI(M) MLA Samsul Haque, with high voter turnouts of 40.49% and 39.48%, respectively, by 11 am. Bageshwar, Uttarakhand, holds a by-poll following the passing of BJP MLA Chandan Ram Dass, with candidates from BJP, Congress, and SP, and a 10.13% voter turnout by 9 am. Ghosi, Uttar Pradesh, witnesses a by-poll after Dara Singh Chauhan's resignation from the Samajwadi Party, with candidates from BJP and SP, and no participation from BSP and Congress, and a 9.12% voter turnout by 9 am. Dhupguri, West Bengal, has a vacant seat following the passing of BJP's Bishnu Pada Ray, with candidates from BJP, Trinamool Congress, and CPI(M), and a voter turnout of more than 17% by 9 am. Voting started at 7 am and will conclude at various times, with Dhupguri, West Bengal, closing at 6:30 pm.

Dates for Byelections 2023 announced for five states and one union territory

The Election Commission of India (ECI) has announced the Byelections 2023 dates for five states and one union territory. The election will be held on 27 February in two seats for Maharashtra and one seat in each of these states, West Bengal, Jharkhand, Tamil Nadu, and Arunachal Pradesh. The election will be held in one seat in India’s smallest Union Territory (UT), Lakshadweep. According to the ECI, the result of the byelections in these states and UT will be announced along with the assembly poll result for Tripura, Meghalaya, and Nagaland on 2 March.
